Cheryl Remembering Grandmaw

One time me and Marlene was sitting on the front porch

talking with 2 boys and we heard a bell ringing and

Marlene said, Cheryl what's that and I said I don't know.

One of the boys said, y'all have to beat the bell.

I and went inside to see who was ringing a bell.

It was and my grandmaw ringing a bell for us to come inside.

We were so embarrassed because the boys were laughing

at us.   LOL, do anybody still beat the bell.

Remember the record truck, and the ice cream truck. My grandmaw made me run to catch the record truck to buy her a record.

My grandmaw used to make me take off my bra to go to bed and used to cry. She used to say take that off girl, and I used to cry and tell her I feel funny. LOL

My grandmaw used to send me to Miss Frances grocery store with a nickel to get 2 for a penny cookies. Remember the cold drink cooler by Bazile grocery with the ice and ice water in the big iron ice chest and the saw-dust on the floor. We used to kick the saw-dust around and the saw- dust came in all colors.

My grandmaw used to make me was dishes and when I got finished I used to sit down and she said, get up girl, go wash the bath tub, then I would wash the bath tub, and sit down, and she get up girl, and sweep the floor and after sweeping the floor, I would sit down, and she would say get up girl, You have to learn how to keep working without sitting down. I am glad she taught me that lesson. I see now you have to get up to get your work done. LOL

My Grandmaw would make us eat dinner at 4pm in the evening and it was the best dinner you ever ate, especially the stewed chicken, then you had to do your homework. She was a good, good, good woman, she used to make her own ice cream and put it in the ice box freezer. Ice cream is my favorite dish. Then took our baths with Ivory soap and the bath water smelled like cholrine. The water in New Orleans do not smell like cholrine anymore. We brush your teeth with baking soda. Then you had to say your prayer before you got in the bed. What a good childhood to be loved by your grand parents. Sis Cheryl

She used to listen to her husband, take notes ya'll. LOL.

My memories: Maw Maw and Paw Paw on Gov. Nichols

Gran-maw used to holler out the back door on Gov. Nicholas...Janice, Sue, Marlene, Cheryl, Leroy, & Ronnie and to whoever else was there that day, come and eat your lunch!...can't no body make cog fish balls like gran-maw!

I remember talking with Ronnie a while back about our favorite memories at gran-maw and paw paw's house...and we both remember the iron bulk beds, waking up to the sound of that great big window fan on a summer morning, gran-maw would be in kitchen fixing breakfast. Who had coffee, cream and sugar with buttered toast at gran-maws? Sooo good, I can't duplicate the same taste. Has anyone ever seen the little green man with the top hat on top of the shade in the backyard?

How many Peeties did we lose to that fan?

I remember the purple periwinkles, coming out early in the morning in the summer with no shoes as she tended to her garden, gran-maw always threw her coffee grinds in her garden.

We couldn't go outside the gate until we took our baths that evening. Remember, every evening we had to take a bath, put on freshly ironed clothes, comb our hair, then we could go outside and play.

Remember the dark hall way to the living room and having to go answer the front door at night, the scary stories Aunt Carol use to tell us, playing poker and black jack and jax with Aunt Carol on rainy and stormy days.

Remember sitting on the porch at night and playing I-spy and counting the stars?

Who got their head stuck in the banisters? lol. Remember the green screen door with the silhouette of the little girl and her dog. Paw Paw use to decorate the house at Christmas time us. Remember the great big Santa Clause and all the lights. It was so beautiful to me. Sometimes when I visit New Orleans I drive down Gov Nicholls. I can't believe this little tiny place was my great big world. We used to play in the street. softball, pop-the-whip on roller skates. How did we do all of that on this little tiny street?

Remember crying to spend the night! We all had our turns. Paw Paw was a strong no nonsense man, the head of his household, and everybody knew it. He taught us to be honest and proud. If he sent you to the store and the change was 1 cent. You had better give it to him and when you did, he would give you a nickel, but you needed to give it to him without him asking for it.

When gran-maw went home to be with Jesus, I dreamt that I saw her on a hillside in a meadow and she told me not to cry, because she wasn't dead..and this was before I knew anything about being saved or had read the bible for myself. I stop crying, and I remember at gran-maw's wake none of the grandchildren were scared or apprehensive about going to the casket, we were all climbing up to it to see and touching the casket, crazy, I think we knew she was alright, what a blessing!

These are just a few of my memories, I love my family and I thank God I'm a part of it.

You KNOW What..?that's why she kept that pot on the side of her bed, I Slept in Her room...so she didn't want me walk in the dark hall..Lord Knows I was afraid of the dark...and so did she" (6/19/09)

Terry Lyons says...
"I remember when Michael fell and cut his eye on the side of the iron bunk bed, and GrawMaw said put some pepper on it. "WHAT" I loved GrawMaw's red beans, I have never tasted any like hers. But beans with the grits, I could not get with that, even though I ate almost anything.

I remember playing in the shade, visiting Gand Paw Joe in the little back apartment with the funny smell. Rocking in the swing on the front porch. Me, Ruth, and Leanie singing "Rock a my baby and a rock, rock, rock"! See we had our own songs back then. " (6/19/09)
